Trust me, you don't want to know what I had to deal with to get this site up and running again.
Just... trust me on this one.
Ugh.

Review: No Sleep Till Wonderland by Paul Tremblay |

After what just may be one year exactly, a year from when I first encountered Mark Genevich, he is back, having landed on my doorstep sometime in the never-ending afternoon hours that are, five days a week, my work day.
Genevich first came to me, then as now via Paul Tremblay, through some hundred-some pages entitled The Little Sleep. We see his return, his further exploits and (mis)adventures, in No Sleep Till Wonderland.
You may notice a recurring theme. Yeah, you've got it. Sleep.
Like I said, it's been a year since I last sat down with Mark. And it's been a strange year. A strange year that has brought me a little closer to Mr. Genevich. Guess this is what was meant, or at least implied, by whomever said an audience brings itself, or oneself, to the show.
For the past nine, ten, whatever--frankly, I can't remember (and probably don't give a damn. sometimes)--months, I have experienced sleep, uh, problems. Too much, not enough. I've had both. Like Mark, I have unexpectedly fallen asleep, though not in the same manner, and with no hypnagogic hallucinations either. At least, I don't think so. There's also the episodes of insomnia. Variety, right? Sure. Whatever. Now, the thing is, I'm not narcoleptic, and I'm not an insomniac either. Technically speaking. I am, or have, nothing. I know this because I have been told so by two sleep studies and twice as many doctors. Guess my "problems" are psychological then. Great.

Review: Phantom, edited by Paul Tremblay & Sean Wallace |

ME: I'm a big time scaredy cat. So my tastes tend to be particular; "literary horror" if there's such a thing.
COLLEAGUE: "Literary Horror" ...Dude, you made that up!
from Paul Tremblay's introduction
Two big words, those. Literary and horror. The debate, the discussion, has been on for some time. A long time. I get into it too. Thing is, it's all subjective, right? But still...
Literary means one thing to someone and something completely different to another. A lot of what gets labeled literary is no better, or is in fact worse, than everything else, than the other. That is, everything that's not literary. By that, it's dismissable, couldn't possibly be of any worth. And the other, the not literary, is often what we call genre. Genre fiction, genre stories, genre this and that. And then the subgroups of genre. Which is where horror comes in.
That second big word. Horror. Horror is all too frequently looked down upon. Like all that isn't literary couldn't be what it is supposedly aspiring to, horror couldn't even be literary. So where does that leave it? Well, whatever. Besides, what is horror?
Now, to get at this, I'm going to talk films for a minute. I mean, it's all the same. Or close enough. Again, what is horror?

I managed to do a security upgrade, but vBulletin's patented Highway Robbery System is making it incredibly difficult to do some things for no fucking reason other than they want to make people pay a second time for something they were promised the first time.
More information here.
